Happy October!
Writing a blog about birth month flowers never feels like a job. I look at beautiful photos, research flowers, share fun facts, and spotlight joyous moments, all while calling it work. Obviously, there is no downside here. It’s hard to select my favorite thing about this job, but one of my top five would be all of the things I have learned in the past two years.
One of the most interesting subjects I have researched is the significance of various types of flowers in different cultures. A great example of this arose from my exploration of October’s birth month flower. The month of October brings Hindu festivals Diwali and Navaratri. Marigolds are front and center in ceremonies and celebrations, signifying purity, auspiciousness, and the divine. In Thailand, marigolds are a symbol of joy and good fortune, and feature in important celebrations, such as weddings. Here in the United States, marigolds are one of the sure signs of autumn. Their orange-gold velvety balls adorn many a fall tableau and herald the change of the seasons.
Whatever your culture, marigolds are a beautiful sign of all that is lovely about the fall season. Happy October!
